Just Another Liberal Yankee

So, over the course of the past week, I have had some conversations with friends in which I was referred to with the labels of "liberal" and "Yankee" respectively. How on earth does a Newt-supporting Republican from Ohio become mistaken for a liberal, Yankee? I find this amusing.

Do we need to go over your birth certificate again? I know the truth!!!

You know, I was just talking to some Korean exchange students about the Bible today, and one of them in particular possessed this disturbingly common idea that Sexual immorality is acceptable in Christianity. Perhaps it had something to do with his Muslim room mate...

I think I straightened some things out...with love, of course. And I plan on following up with emails. He is, I think, deciding between Christianity and Islam.

You are liberal! At least in some areas you are - you even admitted it! In the defense of those who think you are liberal, shall I cite examples? Here's the biggest one: you strongly support our government sending money overseas to help alleviate poverty in third world countries. That, IMO is not a “conservative” point of view. You also believe that social services are more important than lower taxes. Sounds like a Demo-rat to me!! ;)

Hynes, what does that have to do with making fun of Steve right now?

Ok, ok, so I misquoted. Sue me. ;) What you actually said was that you believe the US needs to increase foreign aid and that you believe in lower taxes but not at the risk of fiscal irresponsibility. Which I, grudgingly, agree with (the last part). But I still think you're a liberal, Mr. the USA is so wealthy we should take our money and send it to countries that probably don't even like us anyway because they're poor and we're not ;)

Adding to the Steve Lamp chatboard...

So what do "liberal" and "conservative" mean these days anyway? It's not like either of them really care about the poor or do anything to alleviate social inequity (as Jim Wallis would say...oooops I just blew my cover). It's basically become just a way for Dems and Repubs to sling mud at each other ("Well you liberal yankee you") as far as I'm concerned.

It seems to be a commonplace international view, that Americans are

1. Socially Liberal
AND
2. Christian

Which is both ridiculous and false.

I guess I didn't catch the joke.

Also, my name is David. Not "Hynes".

Glad to know we're on a first name basis, Hynes.

Actually, we're not. But since when do you address someone in a conversation by their last name, unless you're in a welding shop (like I was all of my high school) or the military?

Wow. That was just plain cold, Hynes.

David, meet Paula.

There, now we can be friends again

Well, I'm glad to see you're entertaining yourself by continuing to address me by my last name. Enjoy.

I'm sorry, David. :-)

Hey David, Did you ever think that after all the blogging Steve has done, our bickering would have yielded the highest number of comments? I think we may be a true disgrace.

Truce.
